Nigeria's EV Revolution: Is Africa Ready to Skip CNG and Go Electric?

August reports show Nigeria is speeding up the development of its electric vehicle ecosystem, even as the nation grapples with one of its most pressing energy challenges: an unreliable national power grid.
Local automotive industry leaders have made a clear stance:

The statement highlights Nigeria's urgency to embrace clean mobility. After two weeks of field visits across Nigeria in July - traveling through Abuja, Lagos, Victoria Island, Port Harcourt, Kano and Kaduna - it became clear that the country's energy transition is far more complex than a simple switch from gasoline vehicles directly to electric cars.
On the ground, Nigeria is already undergoing a critical intermediate shift: moving from fossil gasoline to CNG (compressed natural gas).
CNG adoption is rising rapidly across Nigerian cities. Commercial three-wheelers are among the earliest adopters, as CNG delivers a cost-effective and practical fuel solution for today's transport market.
For local transport operators and Nigerian businesses, the priority question is not "How fast can we switch to EVs?" Instead, the core concern remains: How can we cut transport costs and secure a stable energy supply right now? This is where CNG fills a vital gap in Nigeria's mobility landscape.
This does not mean electric vehicles have no future in Nigeria. The energy transition is not a zero-sum game where one fuel replaces another. Gasoline is the legacy fuel. CNG is the present solution.
